Casey Garfinkel's first career goal proved to be a game-winner. Her tally in the 15th minute of play led the Vermont Catamounts to a 1-0 victory over visiting Vermont on the first day of the TD Bank Classic at Virtue Field.

CatamounTV HighlightsSarah Martin's corner kick flew into the box and was deflected by a Kent State defender. The ball made its way out to Garfinkel stationed on the left side of the penalty box. She ran into the shot and fired a blast from 25 yards out to give the Catamounts the lead.

Kent State had several good looks on scoring opportunities but failed to convert in the second half. The Golden Flashes ramped up the pressure in the final 15 minutes of the match, but the Vermont defense held up. UVM goalkeeper
Ally Ramos made several stops from close range and her diving save to the near post with nine seconds remaining preserved the victory for the Catamounts.

Ramos finished the day with seven stops in the UVM net. Katie Kingsbury played the first 32 minutes and made two saves, but was injured in the first half and replaced by Madison Helterbran. She finished with six saves for Kent State.

Vermont improves to 2-1 overall and has posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2011 campaign. Kent State falls to 1-2-1 on the year.

The Catamounts and Golden Flashes will be back in action on Sunday for day two of the TD Bank Classic. Kent State takes on New Hampshire at 11 a.m. and will be followed by Quinnipiac against Vermont at 1:30 p.m.

New Hampshire posted a 2-1 win over Quinnipiac to open the tournament on Friday.
