FINAL SCORE: Michigan 15, Vermont 13ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Vermont outscored Michigan 5-2 in the fourth quarter, but penalties plagued the Catamounts as Michigan capitalized on 4-of-6 extra-man opportunities in its 15-13 win on Saturday in Ann Arbor. UVM falls to 2-3 on the season, while Michigan improves to 3-2.
Six Catamounts posted a multi-point performance against the Wolverines, led by
Cam Milligan who matched his season-high with seven points on three goals and four assists.
Ian MacKay extended his point streak to 33 consecutive games as the junior recorded four points on three scores and a helper, and senior
James Barlow recorded a pair of goals and assists for Vermont as well.
Jon Kaplan (2-2) made 11 saves in net for Vermont for his second double-figure save effort of the year.
Kyle Jackson paced Michigan's offense with a hat trick and three assists, while four more Wolverines added a pair of scores. Ian King registered four points on two goals and two helpers for U-M. Goalkeeper Logan Gerald (3-2) collected 17 saves in the cage and five ground balls.
A heavily offensive first quarter was fueled by MacKay's hat trick in the first 15 minutes. The Wolverines kicked off the contest going up 1-0 early on, but Milligan struck from the top left to tie it up on his seventh goal of the season.
MacKay netted three unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the quarter to give Vermont a 4-3 cushion.
The Wolverines outscored the Catamounts 3-1 in the second quarter. Michigan took a two-goal lead midway through the second period and scored on a man-up opportunity, but was halted by Barlow on a Milligan helper down low in front of the U-M net (6-5).
Michigan found its rhythm in the third period as Kyle Jackson tucked one into the net to open second half scoring and gave Michigan a 7-5 lead. Milchling answered back through an open cage to put Vermont with one. The Wolverines then strung together a four-goal run through the remainder of the period, closing out the quarter with their largest lead of the game (13-8).
Dawes Milchling and Milligan propelled a 5-2 Vermont run in the fourth period as they each player tallied his second score of the afternoon. Moments later,
Nick Bartlett sent it down the center of the field on a fast break and connected 10 yards out of the goal (14-11).
MacKay stormed the cage and a backhand feed across the center to Milligan with six minutes left in the game put Vermont within three (15-12). Barlow buried his second goal into Michigan's net, but Vermont's five-goal rally was not enough as the Catamounts fell to the Wolverines in the Big House.
Freshman
TJ Subel made his debut at the X for Vermont, as the rookie won 13-of-24 faceoff attempts. Both teams posted 47 shots on the afternoon, while U-M held a narrow 27-24 ground ball advantage.
Vermont gets ready for the second half of its two-game road trip as it heads to Oshawa, Ontario on Tuesday (March 8) to take on Canisius. Face-off against the Golden Griffins at is set for 3 p.m.
